Hazy Golden Gate

Hazy Golden GateTaken at the weekend during our Sunday trek from the ferry building to the bridge and back. The bridge was still under a haze (as was most of the bay area), but I liked how it reflected in the small pool that is in the wildlife reserve section of Crissy Fields.

More Progress

Saturday, October 7A little more progress this week on the exterior. Still not the final colour, nor is the roof tiled, but definitely getting closer. The rain last week didn’t seem to cause any problems, and there were people working inside when I wandered around to get this photo on Saturday afternoon.

Taipei Crossing

Fast LaneI’ve liked this particular photo ever since I took on a business trip to Taipei, Taiwan. It was just getting dark, and it had been raining most of the day so the lights were reflecting off the wet roads.

The long exposure makes the cars seem like just a blur as they move through the frame which contrasts so well with the stationary pedestrian.

Post-Tensioned Waffle Slab Foundations

FoundationsNot a great photo, but I only had the cellphone with me today on my way home from the ferry terminal on my bike. I decided to take a detour through Bayport to see how far from the terminal our future home will be. Just as I got into the area though I saw that they were getting ready to pour foundations for some future phases and thought it would be nice to get a photo showing what is inside the concrete.

In the photo you can see the green clad steel cables that provide the tension on the concrete (they are fixed at one end, and tensioned once the concrete is almost cured). You can also see all the 3′ square black boxes that add the waffle to the slab.

Yahoo! Mail Beta

Yahoo upgraded their beta webmail client at the end of last week, and I’ve been using it over the weekend on both my Linux machines and my PowerBook. It is trying to behave like a native email client and makes extensive use of AJAX tricks to achieve that. Mostly they pay off too, though it can be a little slow to respond at times.

The nice features are the split window style display, so you can see the email message subjects etc in the top half of the browser window, and the current email message in the lower portion. They also provide extensive keyboard shortcuts, so it feels very much like a native mail client (it would be nice if the option to not be reminded about them applied to all, rather than having to be selected for each operation though). Drag and drop of messages into folders is slick too (much simpler than the old drop down mechanism).

Exterior Walls

Exterior WallsWe dropped by our house to be earlier today to check on progress, and while we expected to see the dry wall going on inside the house, it was a pleasant surprise to see the first layer of the exterior finish had been applied ouside too.

Having all the doors and windows covered with polythene sheets made it impossible to see what was going on most of the interior, but the master bedroom french doors were ajar giving us a glimpse of fitted dry wall. Quite a change from two weeks ago!
