PowerBook Crash After 10.4.11 Update

Not so good! This is the screen I was greeted with the other day when I woke my PowerBook up. I’ve done this for years without seeing any problems, then they updated to 10.4.11 and it now my poor PowerBook fails to wake up from sleep mode at least half the time.

Normally it crashes before the screen is woken up so I can’t see what’s going on. I’ve had a few crash reports on the next reboot (all pointing at a null pointer access in the video driver). Looks like somebody has screwed something up in the power management code of the video driver.

It is very annoying though, and takes a forced shutdown and reboot to get the machine back. Doesn’t take that long since Mac OS X boots fast, but it is still disappointing when the machine has been rock solid for the 5 years I’ve had it, and rebooting has been something I only do after updates. Oh, and the fact that this problem appeared just after the last “security” update makes me very suspicious of that update. Hope they fix it soon (I keep sending them the crash reports).

Monterey Octopus

OctopusThese guys are very hard to get photos of. They don’t like flashes, they live in relatively dark tanks, in a dark area of the aquarium and they’re hardly ever out in the open. And when they are out, there are throngs of people around the tank trying to get a good look at these amazing animals.

Climbing Frog!

Climbing Frog! These guys are relative newcomers to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, living downstairs from the Outer Bay exhibit along with the fresh water otters, the Asian Vine Snakes and a few other animals.

Next time I go I must take the tripod though for these guys as they stay perfectly still, making them a perfect model for a lower ISO setting (these were taken hand held at ISO 1600 to cope with the low light level).

Blue, So Blue

JellySometimes hard to believe that these jellyfish are real. They look so alien, especially against that very blue background. This is not of the clichéd orange ones from the large tank, but one of the less photographed ones in the smaller exhibits before you reach the jelly fish wall.

I will have some more photos uploaded soon from the more artistic jellyfish exhibit downstairs in the outer bay side of the Monterey Bay Aquarium too, which is soon to be closed to make space for something new. Many of those creatures are even more surreal than this one.

Blue Tail

Blue TailWhile hiking back down the valley view trail in Big Sur during our camping trip a few weeks back, we spotted this little lizard with a very blue tail! It’s not exactly going to help keep him hidden among the leaves and twigs, so I wonder why it is blue? A warning perhaps that he’s not tasty…

Still, he sat still long enough for a couple of photos which makes a change!

Vertography Blog

VertographyI’ve just launched a new blog, with the goal of providing information to help you live a greener life, without compromising on its quality. This is not information for the hard-core tree hugger, but information for everyday people. Yesterday looked at eco-friendly lighting options; today a search engine that plants trees for every 1000 searches performed (and produces great results too thanks to Yahoo!).

In addition to simple tips for greening up your life, it is also going to cover some cool green technology that is being developed or tested. Today included a post about plugin hybrid cars. And there’s lots more cool, green technology out there for us to cover!

Blue Share

As a little learning exercise, I created a plugin for WordPress that adds a small Twitter icon to the bottom of each post. When a reader clicks on that icon they are prompted to enter their Twitter username and password, and a short message (the title of the post and a link to it) will be added to their Twitter feed, allowing them to share the post with their followers.

If you’d like to play with it (and I emphasise at this point that this is still a work in progress), you can download it. Instructions for installation and customisation are after the jump.
